TxDOT prepares for Hurricane Dolly

RECENT ACTION:

TxDOT personnel are monitoring road and bridge conditions to determine whether wind and rain conditions present a threat to travel.  As little as six inches of water can float some vehicles.  Travel in the area affected by Hurricane Dolly is strongly discouraged.

At the direction of law enforcement officials in the region, the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge and Park Road 100 north of South Padre Island Convention Center in Cameron County are closed.

ONGOING ACTION:

All coastal districts and support districts are standing by with fuel tanks filled and personnel on standby.  TxDOT staff and resources will be deployed as needed to respond to the storm.

TxDOT is using its dynamic message signs to convey important information about travel conditions.  In South Texas, drivers are being warned that a hurricane warning has been issued and are discouraged from travel to the Brownsville area.  In the Corpus Christi area, drivers are being warned that inland flooding presents driving hazards.

TxDOT is actively participating in activities at the State Operations Center in Austin.

TxDOT's Emergency Operations Center in Austin is open.

PREVIOUS ACTION:

TxDOT activated 14 Courtesy Patrol vehicles along evacuation routes in far South Texas to help stranded vehicles get off the road and provide other emergency motorist assistance.  These vehicles are now on standby and may be deployed after the most dangerous storm conditions pass.

TxDOT used its dynamic message signs to encourage motorists to fill their vehicle fuel tanks.  TxDOT issued this message on Sunday, July 20 using 147 dynamic message signs along the Texas Gulf Coast.  Increased fuel demand all along the Gulf Coast indicates that motorists responded to this message and other calls to prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Dolly.
